In the fall of 2009, I took the Deepening Your Practice track of Birchwood Center’s 200 Hour Teacher Training Program. I’d been practicing yoga for six years, typically taking 3-4 classes a week, and wanted to learn more about yoga philosophy and broaden my understanding of the postures. I had no ambitions of becoming a teacher, so being able to deepen my own practice and knowledge of yoga without getting certified was perfect for me. No tests! It was amazing.
The most important thing I took from the program was becoming more aware of my body. I had just turned sixty and was a fairly athletic person with a tendency to be tough on myself. I had to learn to do less. I also gained a better sense of where my body was in space.
In the years since, I’ve had three joint replacements and I can’t stress enough how much yoga and all I learned in the Deepening program helped. I had an astonishingly speedy recovery from all three surgeries. The physical therapists were amazed with my progress and, in fact, one of them shared my story with her colleagues at Good Samaritan Hospital. I attribute most if not all of my success to my deepened yoga practice.
