There is an uplifting, joyful song that I like entitled “I Am”, a sing along mantra with musical embellishment by Guru Singh, Seal & Friends. It has a lovely tune and it makes me laugh, reminiscing about a similar mantra I know, “I am who I am and that’s all that I am,” chanted by a great guru, Popeye, with “am” pronounced “yam”. Not quite as precious, but as true.
I am who I am
That is all that I yam
I am That
That I yam
Popeyeji taught us yoga in the best way, with a wink. We did not know that seeds were being implanted: courage, joy, strength, heroism, love, acceptance, and vegetarianism. We sat before him and he transmitted his teachings unto us. So I followed my guru’s instructions, travelling the path laid out with all its dangerous turns, twists, hardships and triumphs, and now I teach yoga as well. I’ve studied, practiced, done tapas, performed seva, adjusted my karma, and listened to the quiet voice saying nothing and everything, all at the same time. I learned that it is my job and my duty to be me. That’s all; that is that.
I am who I am, that is that. I am who I am, that is that
I am who I am and that’s all that I am
I yam That
